“So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” Psalm 90:12 (KJV)
The older I become, the more aware I am of how quickly life moves. Days become weeks, weeks become years, and before we know it, moments we thought would always be available have become memories.
Most of us do not begin the morning thinking about the fragility of life. We wake up, look at our schedules, and start moving from one responsibility to the next. There is always something that needs our attention, an errand to run, a call to return, a room to clean, or a problem to solve. We become so focused on getting through the day that we sometimes miss the life unfolding within it.
Then something unexpected causes us to pause. Perhaps someone becomes ill, a loved one passes away, or a familiar routine suddenly changes. For a moment, everything that seemed so urgent becomes less important. We begin to notice what was there all along: the sound of a loved one’s voice, the warmth of sunlight through the window, laughter shared across a table, or the quiet blessing of simply being together. Life is fragile, but that truth is not meant to make us afraid. It is meant to help us become more present.
Psalm 90:12 asks God to teach us to number our days, not so we will anxiously count how many we may have left, but so we will learn how to value the one we have now. This kind of awareness is also part of wellness. Wellness is not only caring for the body; it is learning how to be fully present in our own lives.
I sometimes catch myself thinking, I will do that later. I will make the call later. I will sit down and rest later. I will enjoy the moment after everything on my list is finished. But the list is rarely finished, and later can quietly become another missed opportunity.
Perhaps you understand that feeling too. Being present does not require us to abandon our responsibilities. It simply means refusing to let them consume every part of us. It means slowing down long enough to recognize God’s grace in the life we are living right now.
Maybe today we can allow ourselves to pause, to enjoy a conversation without watching the clock, to notice the beauty around us, to release an unnecessary disagreement, or to thank someone while we still have the opportunity. We do not have to wait for a crisis to appreciate what God has already placed in our hands.
Life’s fragility reminds us that today is not ordinary simply because it looks familiar. It is a gift, delicate, precious, and filled with moments we may never experience in quite the same way again. Let us not become so busy preparing for tomorrow that we miss the grace God has placed within today.
Pearl's Prayer:
Father, thank You for the gift of today. Teach me to live with wisdom, gratitude, and intention. Help me slow down, cherish the people I love, and recognize Your grace in the moments I might otherwise overlook. Keep me from living in fear of tomorrow or regret over yesterday. Help me to be fully present with You today. Amen.
