“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God… shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6–7 (KJV)
God’s Word gave me comfort during COVID-19, but that did not mean worry disappeared. After I closed my Bible, my thoughts could return to the people I loved and the circumstances I could not control.
I discovered that finding joy in God’s Word and releasing worry through prayer were both necessary. Scripture reminded me of who God was; prayer helped me place my concerns into His hands.
Worry can return quickly. One concern leads to another until the mind is carrying conversations that have not happened and outcomes that may never occur. Even in a quiet room, our thoughts can remain busy.
Philippians 4:6 does not shame us for feeling concerned. Instead, it gives us a direction: “In every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” Paul gives our worry somewhere to go.
During COVID-19, prayer became a lifeline. I could not change every situation or help people in the ways I wanted. But I could call their names before God and trust Him to work beyond my reach. Supplication means becoming specific with God. We can name the person, fear, decision, or situation weighing on us. We do not need impressive words. We simply need to speak honestly.
Paul also includes thanksgiving. Gratitude does not mean pretending everything is well. It reminds us that God has carried us through difficulties before. Yesterday’s faithfulness becomes evidence we can trust Him once again today.
The passage does not promise that every situation will change immediately after we pray. It promises that God’s peace will guard our hearts and minds through Christ. While we wait for Him to work around us, His peace begins working within us.
This is an important part of spiritual wellness. We were never created to carry every uncertainty alone. Prayer helps us release what we cannot control and receive grace for what is before us. When worry rises, take a wellness pause:
-
Pause: Recognize what you are feeling.
-
Name it: Tell God specifically what is troubling you.
-
Remember: Thank Him for one way He has helped you before.
-
Release: Place the person or situation into His hands again.
