Strong Enough for Everyday Life

“It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect.” Psalm 18:32 (KJV)

When we think about strength, we may picture someone lifting heavy weights or crossing the finish line of a marathon. I have crossed marathon finish lines, but I have learned that strength is not measured only in miles, medals, or dramatic accomplishments.

Sometimes strength looks like carrying groceries into the house. It is climbing a flight of stairs, rising from a chair without struggling, bending down to tend the garden, or keeping up with our grandchildren. These ordinary movements may not receive applause, but they help us remain active, confident, and independent.

As I grow older, I am becoming more aware that strength must be maintained intentionally. The body changes. Movements that once felt effortless may require more thought. An aching knee, a stiff joint, or a tired muscle may tempt us to stop moving altogether. Yet when we stop using our muscles, everyday activities can gradually become more difficult.

This does not mean we should push our bodies beyond their limits. It means learning to respect our bodies while continuing to use and strengthen what God has given us.

Psalm 18:32 reminds us that God is the One who equips us with strength. His strength carries us through trials, responsibilities, and changing seasons. But caring for our physical strength also requires our participation. God may give us the wisdom and opportunity to begin, but we must be willing to take the first small step.

That step does not have to be impressive. We may believe that five minutes of movement will not make a difference. We may compare ourselves with someone who walks farther, lifts more, or moves more easily. We may even compare ourselves with the person we were twenty years ago.

But comparison can cause us to overlook the grace within our own progress. A few gentle chair exercises, a short walk, light resistance, or several minutes of stretching may seem insignificant. Yet small, consistent choices can become the foundation of greater strength. The goal is not to prove anything to anyone. The goal is to care for the vessel God has given us.

God may still have places for us to go, people for us to encourage, gardens for us to tend, grandchildren for us to enjoy, and work for us to accomplish. Maintaining our strength helps us remain available for those assignments.

We do not have to begin perfectly. We simply have to begin prayerfully, wisely, and consistently. Today’s small movement may help us perform tomorrow’s ordinary task with greater confidence.

Choose one small strengthening activity that is appropriate for your body. Practice it for five minutes. As you move, thank God for what your body can do instead of criticizing it for what it cannot do. Strength is not only preparation for extraordinary accomplishments. It is God’s provision for living our ordinary days well.

Pearl's Prayer:

Lord, thank You for being the source of my strength. Help me care for my body with wisdom, patience, and grace. Keep me from comparing my journey with anyone else’s. Give me the courage to begin and the discipline to continue. Strengthen me for the life, service, and purpose still ahead. Amen.
