Have you ever stopped and paid attention to your breathing? Most of the time, we do not even think about it. Our lungs take in air and release it. We breathe while sleeping, working, talking, cooking, gardening, and caring for everyone around us. It happens so naturally that we often take it for granted.
But today, I want us to pause and consider this: every breath is a gift from God. The Bible tells us that when God created Adam, He formed him from the dust of the ground. Adam had a body, but he did not yet have life. Then something extraordinary happened: “And the Lord God…breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” Genesis 2:7 (KJV)
Adam’s first breath came directly from God. That thought humbles me. The same God who breathed life into Adam continues to sustain us today. Acts 17:25 tells us that God gives “to all life, and breath, and all things.” Every breath we take quietly announces, God has kept me for another moment.
This week, I caught myself moving from one thing to another without stopping. My thoughts were racing, and I could feel the tension building in my body. I had become so focused on everything that needed to be done that I had forgotten to slow down. Then I paused and took a long, gentle breath.
Nothing around me had changed. The responsibilities were still there, and the things requiring my attention had not disappeared. But something within me began to settle. That simple breath reminded me that God was present and that I did not have to carry everything at once.
Have you ever felt that way? Sometimes our bodies reveal what our mouths have not expressed. When we are worried, overwhelmed, or frightened, our breathing may become quick and shallow. We may even hold our breath without realizing it. That is why pausing to breathe can become a sacred wellness practice.
When life feels heavy, stop for a moment. Place your feet firmly on the floor, relax your shoulders, and take a slow, comfortable breath. As you inhale, pray: “Lord, fill me with Your peace.” As you exhale, pray: “Lord, I release what I cannot control.”The power is not in the breathing technique, our power comes from God. But slowing our breathing can help settle our bodies and turn our attention toward the One who gave us breath in the first place.
In Ezekiel 37, God brought the prophet into a valley filled with dry bones. The situation appeared lifeless and beyond repair. But when God sent breath into those bones, what had appeared hopeless stood up and lived again.
Perhaps there are dry and weary places in your life today. You may be carrying concerns about your family, your health, your finances, or an uncertain tomorrow. God’s breath reminds us that He can bring renewal into places that feel depleted. So, take a breath. You are still here. God is still sustaining you. That breath you barely noticed this morning is evidence of His mercy. As long as God gives us breath, we have another opportunity to trust Him, care for ourselves, encourage someone else, and offer Him praise. “Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord.”, Psalm 150:6 (KJV).
Take three slow, comfortable breaths. With each breath, thank God for something you might normally overlook. Allow gratitude to settle your heart before continuing your day. Every breath is a quiet reminder that God is still sustaining me, renewing me, and giving me another opportunity to begin again.
What burden do you need to release into God’s hands today? When life becomes overwhelming, how can your breathing remind you to pause and pray?
Pearl's Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the breath of life. Forgive me for taking this precious gift for granted. When I feel anxious or overwhelmed, help me to pause, breathe, and remember that You are near. Breathe fresh hope into every dry and weary place within me. Fill me with Your peace, renew my strength, and let every breath I take become an offering of praise. In Jesus’ name, amen.
