There's something I've been thinking about that has made me appreciate God's grace in a way I hadn't considered before. Jesus knew. He knew humanity would fall short. He knew there would be disobedience, selfishness, mistakes, and sin. And before I ever took my first breath, God already knew the person I would become.
He knew there would be times when I would make poor decisions, speak when I should have remained silent, or fail to do something I knew was right. And yet, Jesus still came. He still chose to give His life. When I think about that, I find myself asking, how can someone love me that much?
Romans 5:8 tells us that Christ died for us while we were still sinners. Not after we had corrected every mistake. Not after we had proven ourselves worthy. Not after we had become everything God intended us to be. While we were still sinners. That's grace.
The more I think about it, the more I realize that understanding grace should change something in me. You see, I can be hard on myself sometimes. I can revisit a mistake long after it has happened, thinking about what I should have said or done differently. Perhaps you've done that too.
But if God extends mercy to me, forgives me when I repent, and continues working in my life, shouldn't I learn to receive that grace rather than remain imprisoned by yesterday's mistakes? That doesn't mean my actions have no consequences. It doesn't mean I shouldn't acknowledge when I've done something wrong or make amends when necessary. It means that my failures don't have to be the final chapter of my story.
Hebrews 4:16 invites us to come boldly before the throne of grace to obtain mercy and find help when we need it. I love that word, boldly. Because I realize I can walk boldly, not because I will never make another mistake, but because I know I have a Savior to whom I can turn to when I do. He still hears me. He still guides me. He still provides for me. And through His grace, He helps me get back on my feet.
But there's another part of this lesson that I cannot overlook. If God has extended so much grace to me, how can I refuse to extend grace to someone else? How often do we become impatient when people don't meet our expectations? How quickly can we judge someone for making a mistake, forgetting a responsibility, or saying something that disappoints us? Yet haven't we all needed patience and forgiveness?
Ephesians 4:32 encourages us to be kind, tenderhearted, and forgiving toward one another, even as God has forgiven us through Christ. That doesn't mean pretending that hurtful behavior is acceptable or abandoning healthy boundaries. It means choosing not to let resentment and judgment control our hearts.
Perhaps someone needs a little patience today. Maybe someone needs an encouraging word rather than criticism. Perhaps there's an apology I need to offer or forgiveness I need to work toward. Grace should not stop with me.
As I conclude these reflections on the sacrifice of Christ, I realize that my gratitude must be more than words. If I am truly thankful for His love, then that gratitude should influence how I live, how I speak, how I forgive, and how I treat the people around me.
I will never fully comprehend why Jesus loved me enough to make such a sacrifice. But I'm grateful that He did. He knew my weaknesses. He knew my failures. He knew I would need His mercy again and again. He knew. And still, He came. Because He came, I have hope. Because He loves me, I have value. And because He gives me grace, I can learn to extend grace to others. What a wonderful Savior.
Pearl's Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me despite my shortcomings. You knew my weaknesses before I was born, yet Your love has never failed. Thank You for Your mercy, Your forgiveness, and the grace that allows me to begin again. Help me not to remain burdened by mistakes You have forgiven. Teach me to walk boldly in faith, humbly acknowledging my dependence on You. And Father, help me to extend the same compassion, patience, and grace to those around me. May Your love be reflected in my words and actions each day. In Jesus' name, Amen.
I am the Vessel, God is the Grace.
