Faith: Before the Water Changed

“His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.”  John 2:5 (KJV)

Have you ever considered how much faith it takes just to begin another day? In my ordinary day, there are so many moving parts. Plans to make. People to speak with. Responsibilities waiting for attention. And sometimes the unexpected arrives before I've finished what I had planned.

I don't always know how those pieces will come together. Some may fit beautifully. Others may fall apart. But I get up and step into the day in faith, believing that as it unfolds, God is present and able to bring together what He intends for me to receive, learn, or accomplish. That doesn't mean I know how the day will end. It means I don't have to know before I begin.

I've been thinking about that as I read John 2 and the story of the wedding at Cana. A celebration was underway when a problem arose: the wine had run out. Mary noticed the need and brought it to Jesus. “They have no wine,” she said.

I'm struck by how little she said. No elaborate explanation. No detailed plan for what Jesus should do. Then Mary turned to the servants and told them, “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.” The problem had not yet been resolved. The water had not become wine. But Mary had brought the need to Jesus.

That feels familiar to me. I often begin a day with more questions than answers. Will things work out as planned? Will I find the right words for a difficult conversation? Will I accomplish what needs to be done? And if I'm not careful, I can spend so much time trying to arrange every piece that I miss the gift of simply beginning.

Here's where I have to be honest with myself. I can encourage someone else to believe God is able. I can remind them of His goodness and tell them to hold on to their faith. Yet when uncertainty interrupts my own day, I sometimes need that same encouragement.

My questions don't mean I have stopped believing. They remind me that faith is something I must keep practicing. And maybe the most practical place to begin is with a simple morning prayer: “Lord, I can't see how all these pieces will fit, but I'm bringing this day to You.”

Mary's response reminds me that faith doesn't require a complete picture. It begins with knowing whom I can turn to. The servants went on to fill the waterpots as Jesus instructed, and the water became wine. John tells us this sign revealed Jesus' glory, and His disciples believed in Him. Their faith was being strengthened as they came to know Him more fully.

I want that kind of growth in my own life, not faith that depends on every plan succeeding, but faith that becomes deeper as I recognize who Jesus is. Because, truthfully, some days the pieces don't come together the way I hoped. A plan changes. A prayer seems unanswered. Something important remains unfinished. Even then, I can look back and ask: Where was God helping me today? What did I learn? Where did I receive the grace to keep going?

I don't always know what a day will bring. But I can rise each morning, bring what concerns me to God, and take the next step in faith. At the end of the day, I may discover that His gifts were not always the ones I expected. Faith doesn't require knowing how all the pieces will come together. It begins with believing in the One who holds them.

Pearl's Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of another day. You know the many responsibilities, concerns, and unexpected moments that fill my life. Sometimes I don't know how everything will come together, but I believe You are present in every circumstance. Help me begin each morning with faith rather than worry. When my plans change or things don't turn out as expected, remind me that Your goodness remains. Teach me to recognize Your hand in my everyday experiences and to grow in my faith as I come to know You more deeply. In Jesus' name, Amen.
