“The eyes of all wait upon thee; and thou givest them their meat in due season. Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing.” Psalm 145:15–16, KJV
Some days, nothing dramatic happens. There is no crisis, but there is also no great breakthrough. We wake up, move through our responsibilities, eat our meals, speak with the people around us, and prepare to do it again tomorrow. We may call it an ordinary day and give it very little thought. But Psalm 145 makes me wonder whether an ordinary day is one of the clearest expressions of God’s care.
David describes a God who upholds, provides, hears, and preserves. I have often read those words while thinking about the difficult seasons, the times when I needed God to rescue me, answer me, or keep me from falling apart. But what about the days when nothing falls apart? Could that also be evidence of His hand?
I can become so focused on what I am still waiting for that I overlook what is already being sustained. The strength to get out of bed. Food available when I am hungry. A clear thought when I need to make a decision. A conversation that brings laughter. A safe return home. None of these may feel miraculous, yet each one quietly supports a life. Perhaps being held by God is not only about being caught when we fall. It may also be the steadiness that allows us to stand, work, serve, think, create, and enjoy the life before us.
Then David says, “Thou openest thine hand.” That image changes the way I think about provision. God’s hand is not tightly closed, forcing us to persuade Him to care. It is open. The provision may not always be what we expected, or arrive in the form we imagined, but His posture toward His creation is generous.
Being fed is more than having food on the table. We are also nourished by friendship, wisdom, rest, purpose, beauty, and moments of joy. Sometimes God’s provision looks so ordinary that we enjoy it without recognizing where it came from.
And then there is the gift of being heard. Not every concern requires a dramatic answer. Sometimes what we need is reassurance, a change in perspective, or the wisdom to notice that an answer has already begun taking shape. This passage invites me to look again, not only at what is missing, but at what is present.
Maybe today was not remarkable. Perhaps there was no major announcement, unexpected blessing, or life-changing moment. Yet you were held. Something sustained you. Some need was met. Some quiet mercy accompanied you through the day. An ordinary day is not necessarily an empty day. It may be filled with the unnoticed maintenance of grace.
Tonight, instead of asking only, “What am I still waiting for?” perhaps we can also ask, “Where was I held, fed, and heard today?” The answers may have been with us all along.
Pearl's Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the quiet ways You care for me. Open my eyes to the provision I often overlook and the ordinary mercies I too easily take for granted. Help me recognize that even an uneventful day can be filled with Your grace. In Jesus' name, Amen.
I am The Vessel, God Is The Grace
