The Gift Behind the Gift

"Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him."  Psalm 127:3 (NIV)

Today, my heart is full. Not because I was expecting anything. In fact, I wasn't expecting anything at all. Out of nowhere, my children surprised me with a gift. There was no birthday to celebrate. No holiday. No special occasion. Just an unexpected expression of love.

As I sat quietly afterward, I realized the gift itself was beautiful, but it wasn't what touched me the most. It was knowing they had thought of me. Sometimes we overlook the ordinary blessings because they have become so familiar. We assume tomorrow will come with another conversation, another hug, another opportunity to say, "I love you." But today reminded me that family is never ordinary.

Children are not simply people we raise. They are one of God's greatest gifts entrusted to our care. We spend years feeding them, teaching them, praying over them, correcting them, encouraging them, and wondering if anything we are saying is actually taking root. Then one unexpected moment arrives. A phone call. A visit. A hug. A simple gift. And suddenly you realize something beautiful has been growing all along.

I found myself thanking God, not just for the surprise, but for allowing me to experience the privilege of being a mother. There were seasons when motherhood felt exhausting. There were sleepless nights, difficult decisions, prayers whispered through tears, and moments when I wondered if I was doing enough. Looking back, I see God's grace woven through every season.

Today's gift wasn't about what my children purchased. It was about what love had become. It reminded me that the seeds planted through years of sacrifice often bloom long after we have forgotten where we planted them.

Family is one of God's greatest classrooms for learning grace. We discover forgiveness, patience, generosity, perseverance, and unconditional love around the kitchen table, in late-night conversations, and through countless ordinary days. Those moments shape us as much as they shape the people we love.

Not every family looks the same. Some are close. Some are separated by distance. Some carry broken places that still need healing. Yet wherever love is nurtured, God is present. Sometimes the greatest gift is not what is placed in our hands, it is the love God has already placed in our hearts.

Today I simply wanted to say, "Thank You." Thank You, Lord, for the gift of family. Thank You for the privilege of loving and being loved. Thank You for children who remind us that some of life's greatest treasures cannot be wrapped in paper. The greatest gift behind every gift is love.

Pearl's Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of family. Thank You for every season of motherhood, every sacrifice, every prayer, every tear, and every unexpected reminder that love continues to grow. Help me never to take the people You have entrusted to my life for granted. Teach me to express love freely, receive it with gratitude, and recognize Your grace in the ordinary moments that become treasured memories. In Jesus' name, Amen.
