When God's Plan Looks Different

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."  Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

I have made many plans in my life. Plans for my family, my career, my ministry, and even the timeline I thought God would follow. I have prayed over those plans and stepped forward believing I knew where He was leading. But life has taught me that God's plans do not always unfold the way I expect.

There have been seasons when doors closed unexpectedly, prayers seemed unanswered, and circumstances interrupted everything I thought was certain. In those moments, I found myself asking, "Lord, if You have good plans for me, why does this season feel so difficult?"

Jeremiah 29:11 is one of the most quoted promises in Scripture, but its greatest beauty is found in its context. God spoke these words to His people while they were living in exile in Babylon. They wanted immediate rescue, but instead, God told them to build houses, plant gardens, raise families, and seek the peace of the place where they were. Their circumstances would not change overnight, but God's purpose for them had not changed.

That speaks to me. Sometimes I spend so much time waiting for God to change my circumstances that I miss what He is doing within me. I become focused on the next chapter while overlooking the grace He is providing in this one. I have come to understand  that God's plan is not simply about arriving at a destination. It is about who I become while walking with Him. He is shaping my character, strengthening my faith, and teaching me to depend on Him in ways I never would have chosen on my own.

Waiting is rarely comfortable, but it is often where God does His deepest work. His promise to prosper His people was never a guarantee of an easy life. It was a promise that He would remain faithful to His purpose. Sometimes He changes our circumstances. Other times, He changes us within our circumstances. Both are evidence of His grace.

Looking back over my life, I can see moments that once felt like interruptions but later became turning points. At the time, I could not understand why God allowed certain delays or disappointments. Today, I can see that He was protecting me, preparing me, and positioning me for what was ahead. What I called a detour, God was using as part of His plan. That realization gives me peace. An interrupted plan does not mean an abandoned purpose. God is still writing your story, even in the waiting.

I still make plans, but I hold them with open hands. I trust that the God who sees the beginning and the end knows what I cannot. Even when the path is unclear, His purpose is not. That is the invitation of Jeremiah 29:11, not simply to believe that God has a plan, but to trust His heart when we cannot yet see His hand.

Pearl's Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for knowing the plans You have for my life. When my plans fall apart, remind me that Yours never do. Help me trust Your timing, walk faithfully through every season, and believe that even in the waiting, You are working for my good and Your glory. Give me hope for tomorrow and grace for today. In Jesus' name, amen.

In times of sickness it is hard to see God's plan. I say like Job, "Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him."

Powerful - “ I still make plans, but I hold them with open hands.”

Waiting is so difficult. I was just speaking to a family member about this last night. While we wait we often question God’s plan, but I so happy that He has a plan and he never abandons His plans for us.
