Faith. Focus. Finish.

Last week, I had the opportunity to witness a celebration honoring those who had moved forward in their academic journey. As accomplishments were recognized, the theme stood out to me: Faith. Focused. Finished. Those three words stayed with me. They seemed perfect for an academic celebration. It takes faith to begin, focus to keep going through challenges and competing responsibilities, and perseverance to finally say, “I finished.”

But the more I thought about those words, the more I realized they speak to more than academic accomplishments. They speak to life. I have started many things in my life with excitement. Starting is often the easy part. But somewhere between the beginning and the finish line, life happens. Distractions come. Doubt creeps in. Responsibilities compete for my attention. Sometimes I even question whether I heard God correctly.

I have learned that moving forward requires more than excitement. I need faith to take the step, focus to stay with the assignment, and faithfulness to finish what God has placed in my hands. The story of Nehemiah reminds me of this.

When Nehemiah heard that the walls of Jerusalem were broken down, he was deeply troubled. Before he began rebuilding, he prayed. He did not know exactly how everything would come together, but he trusted God enough to move forward. That took faith.

Then the work began and so did the opposition. People criticized him, threatened him, and tried to distract him. But Nehemiah remained focused. When his enemies repeatedly tried to call him away from the work, he responded: “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down.” Nehemiah 6:3

Those words speak to me. Everything that asks for my attention does not deserve my attention. Sometimes fear calls us down. Criticism calls us down. Comparison, busyness, other people’s expectations, and even our own uncertainty can pull our attention away from what God has placed before us.Sometimes we simply have to say, “I cannot come down. God has given me something to do.”

Nehemiah stayed with the assignment, and Scripture eventually records these powerful words: “So the wall was finished…” Nehemiah 6:15. Finished.Not because the journey was easy or because there were no obstacles. The wall was finished because Nehemiah trusted God, remained focused, and faithfully continued the work. But finishing does not mean stubbornly completing everything we start. We must make sure we are pursuing what God wants, not simply what we want.

Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us: “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart… In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” God must direct the journey. Sometimes He tells us to begin. Sometimes He tells us to stay focused. Sometimes He redirects us. And sometimes He gives us the grace to finish.

So those three words have become three personal questions for me: Do I have enough faith to take the next step? What is distracting me from what God has called me to do? Is there something God has given me that I need to faithfully finish? We may not see the entire journey, but if God has given us the assignment, we can trust Him for what we need along the way.

Trust God for the direction. Keep your eyes on the assignment. When distractions call you down, remember: “I am doing a great work.” Keep moving, not simply toward what you want, but toward what God wills.

Lord, give me faith to take the next step, focus to remain where You have called me, and faithfulness to finish what You have placed in my hands. Direct my path, help me recognize distractions, and give me the grace to keep moving according to Your will. Amen.
