“The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.” Nahum 1:7
For the last several days, my mind has felt crowded. But today, something was different. I stopped. I opened God’s Word, lay back, and allowed myself to simply be still in His presence. Nothing had suddenly been solved. Every concern had not disappeared. But somehow, I felt safe. In that quiet moment, one thought settled deeply in my spirit: God has me.
I have walked with God long enough to know this is no longer just something I have heard other people say. This is something life has taught me about Him. I have lived through seasons I did not know how I would get through. I have carried responsibilities that felt too heavy. I have waited, worried, prayed, and wondered how things would work out. And yet, here I am. Still standing. Still believing. Still able to look back and see that somehow, even when I did not recognize it at the time, God was there. This I know. God has me.
That is why the story of the Shunammite woman speaks to me differently now. In 2 Kings 4, the son God had blessed her with suddenly became ill and died. Yet when she was asked, “Is it well with thee? Is it well with thy husband? Is it well with the child?” she answered: “It is well.” But everything was not well. Her child was lying lifeless. Her heart had to be broken. She did not know how the story would end. So how could she say, “It is well”?
“It is well” was not a description of her circumstances. Perhaps it was a declaration about where she had placed them. She knew where to go. She knew where her hope rested. She knew that what had happened was not greater than the God she trusted.
I understand that differently now. There are things in my life today that I would not call well. There are concerns I still carry, prayers I am still praying, and outcomes I cannot see. But somewhere deeper than all of that, my soul has learned something circumstances cannot take away. I know God.
There was a time when I thought I needed to know what God was going to do before I could have peace. Life has taught me something different. I do not have to know what God is going to do to know who God is.
Sometimes His relief does not come by removing the problem. Sometimes He quiets my thoughts. Sometimes He gives me a Scripture. Sometimes He gives me a moment to breathe. Sometimes He simply reminds me, You do not have to carry this by yourself. Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.”
Today, I am thankful for that kind of stillness. I am thankful that after all these years, I have history with God. I can look back and see the doors He opened, the strength He gave, the people He sent, the prayers He answered, and the seasons He carried me through. I have seen too much of His faithfulness to believe He will abandon me now.
So when I say, “It is well,” I am not pretending everything is perfect. I do not know how every situation will be resolved. I do not know what tomorrow will bring. I do not know when every prayer will be answered. But this I know: God has me. And because He has me, it is well with my soul.
Pearl's Prayer:
Lord, thank You for every experience that has taught me who You are. When life feels uncertain, remind me of the history I have with You. Help me rest in what I already know: You are faithful, You are present, and You have me. Amen.
I am The Vessel, God Is The Grace
