"The Quiet Grace of a Herb Garden"

“Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed...”                Genesis 1:29, KJV

I reached into the garden bed and came back with the scent of oregano and lemon balm on my fingers. It lingered there, fresh, green, alive. As I stood in the garden clearing away dry brush and loosening the soil around the plants, I noticed the mint pushing through what looked brittle and worn. The oregano was slowly making its way upward too, quiet and steady, rising through the soil in its own time. In that moment, I felt as if God was speaking through what I was seeing.

How many things in us still live beneath what looks dry? That question stayed with me. Because sometimes life can leave us feeling just like that garden bed, covered over, weighed down, neglected by the demands of everyday living. We keep moving, keep showing up, keep pouring out, and rarely stop long enough to ask what in us is tired, what in us is overgrown, or what in us is still trying to breathe.

Maybe you have been moving through a weary season. Maybe life has felt cluttered, overgrown, or emotionally dry. Maybe you have not stopped long enough to notice that something in you is still trying to rise. That is why this moment in the garden felt deeper than gardening. It felt like a lesson in wellness.

Wellness is often spoken about in big ways, plans, routines, goals, and strategies. But sometimes true wellness begins more quietly. It begins with paying attention. It begins with noticing the signs our body, mind, and spirit have been giving us. Fatigue. Tension. Restlessness. A need for air. A need for stillness. A need to clear away what has gathered around us so that what is still living has room to grow.

A herb garden may seem small, but it carries a quiet kind of wisdom. The mint did not ask permission to push through the dry brush. The oregano did not force its way upward all at once. It simply kept growing. And as I brushed the soil away, the fragrance left on my hands became a tender reminder that something living had been touched.

Scripture tells us in Genesis that God gave “every herb bearing seed.” That means what grows from the earth is not random. It is part of His provision. Part of His kindness. Part of the way He nourishes us through simple and steady things. Even Proverbs reminds us, “Better is a dinner of herbs where love is...” There is a kind of healing found in simplicity, peace, and care.

Perhaps that is what I needed to remember. Not everything that looks dry is dead. Not everything covered over has lost its life. Some things are simply waiting for space. Waiting for light. Waiting for gentle attention. Maybe we are too. What if wellness begins there, not in doing more, but in noticing what God has kept alive in you?

Pearl's Prayer:

Lord, thank You for the quiet ways You speak through ordinary moments. Help me to notice what in me still lives, what needs tending, and what needs room to grow. Teach me to honor the simple paths to wellness and to trust that Your care is still at work in every dry place.

Amen.
