“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:2 (KJV)
There is something about the words of that familiar hymn, Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus, that speaks to the heart. Perhaps it's the gentle reminder that no matter what is happening around us, there is a place where we can find peace, strength, and renewed hope.
Have you ever had one of those days when so much was happening that you didn't know where to focus your attention? One concern leads to another. Responsibilities seem endless. Someone needs something from you, decisions must be made, and before you realize it, your mind is consumed with everything except the One who can give you peace.
Sometimes we become so focused on what is happening around us that we lose sight of who is walking with us. The hymn reminds us to turn our eyes toward Jesus. But what does that really mean?
It doesn't mean ignoring our responsibilities, pretending our problems don't exist, or expecting every difficulty to disappear. It means making a conscious decision not to allow the circumstances of life to become greater in our minds than our confidence in God.
Think about Peter in Matthew 14:22–33. When Peter saw Jesus walking on the water, he asked to come to Him. At Jesus' invitation, Peter stepped out of the boat and began walking toward Him. Can you imagine that moment? Peter was doing something that should have been impossible!
But then something happened. Peter noticed the wind. His attention shifted from Jesus to the conditions surrounding him. Fear began to replace his confidence, and he started to sink. Isn't that sometimes our experience?
We begin the day with prayer, trusting God to guide our steps. Then the phone rings, unexpected challenges arise, someone says something that troubles our spirit, or a situation doesn't turn out the way we hoped. Suddenly, our attention shifts. Instead of remembering God's promises, we begin concentrating on everything that could go wrong.
Yet there is something encouraging about Peter's experience that we must not overlook. When Peter cried out, “Lord, save me,” Jesus immediately stretched out His hand. Jesus didn't wait for Peter to get himself together. He didn't leave him struggling in the water. He reached for him. What a beautiful reminder of God's grace!
Our faith may sometimes waver. Our thoughts may become overwhelmed. We may even lose our focus. But Jesus remains faithful, and His hand is still extended toward us. Hebrews 12:2 encourages us to keep looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. Notice that Scripture doesn't direct us to focus on our abilities, our circumstances, or even our understanding of what is happening. It directs our attention toward Christ.
Perhaps that is what makes the message of this hymn so meaningful. The things of earth grow strangely dim, not necessarily because our circumstances have changed, but because our perspective has. The problem may still be there. The unanswered prayer may still be weighing on our hearts. The responsibilities of tomorrow may still be waiting. But when we place them in the presence of God's glory and grace, we are reminded that they do not have the final word over our lives.
The question we need to ask ourselves is not whether life will present challenges, but where we will direct our attention when those challenges come. Think about it. How often do we replay a difficult conversation in our minds, worry about something that hasn't happened, or allow one disappointing moment to overshadow the many ways God has already blessed us? We can become so consumed with what is troubling us that we overlook the evidence of God's goodness right in front of us.
But what if we approached those moments differently? What if, instead of allowing our thoughts to linger on what we cannot change, we reminded ourselves of what we know about God? He is faithful. He is merciful. He hears our prayers, and His grace is sufficient even when we don't have all the answers.
Turning our eyes toward Jesus is not simply something we sing about. It is something we must learn to practice in our daily lives. It is choosing prayer over constant worry, faith over fear, and gratitude over complaining. It is learning to recognize that although we may not have control over every circumstance, we can trust the One who walks with us through them.
Perhaps that is when the things of earth begin to grow strangely dim, not because they no longer matter, but because they no longer overshadow our confidence in God.
Don't allow the size of your circumstances to cause you to lose sight of the greatness of your God. The winds may continue to blow, but Jesus is still within reach.
Pearl's Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for reminding us that even when life becomes overwhelming, You are always near. Forgive us for the times we have allowed our worries, disappointments, and responsibilities to consume our thoughts and distract us from Your presence.
Lord, teach us to keep our eyes fixed on You. When the winds of life begin to blow, strengthen our faith. When our hearts become troubled, restore our peace. When we lose our focus, gently remind us that Your hand is always extended toward us.
Help us to recognize Your goodness in the midst of our everyday experiences. May we find renewed strength in Your Word, comfort in Your promises, and joy in knowing that Your grace is sufficient for every season of our lives.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
I am the Vessel, God is the Grace
