"But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good..." Genesis 50:20 (NKJ)
Family can bring us some of life's greatest joy, but if we're honest, family can also bring some of our deepest hurt. We love one another, but we don't always understand one another. Words are spoken. Feelings get hurt. Expectations go unmet.
Sometimes years pass while something that happened long ago still sits quietly between people who love each other. That's the part of family we don't always talk about. We can take beautiful family pictures, gather around the same table, worship together, and still have places in our relationships that need God's healing.
When I think about an imperfect family in the Bible, I think about Joseph and his brothers. Their family had problems. There was favoritism, jealousy, anger, resentment, and eventually betrayal. Joseph's own brothers threw him into a pit and sold him into slavery. His life changed because of what his family did to him.
Years later, God brought those same brothers back into Joseph's life. By then, Joseph was no longer the young boy they had thrown into a pit. God had carried him through slavery, false accusations, prison, and eventually into a position of authority in Egypt. Now Joseph had the power. He could have gotten even. Instead, he chose grace.
What I appreciate about Joseph's story is that he didn't pretend nothing had happened. Before fully revealing himself, Joseph watched his brothers. He listened and observed their behavior. He wanted to see if they had changed. That reminds me that forgiveness and restoration are not always the same thing. Forgiveness can begin in one heart. Restoration requires people willing to acknowledge what happened, change, and rebuild trust.
Eventually, Joseph saw that his brothers were not the same men who had betrayed him. And when he finally revealed himself, he wept. What years of pain had separated, grace began bringing back together. Later Joseph told them, "You meant evil against me; but God meant it for good."
Joseph wasn't saying that what they did was acceptable. Wrong was still wrong. Hurt was still hurt. He was saying something much greater: "What you did to me did not have the final word over my life. God did."
Perhaps there is a family relationship in your life that isn't what you wish it could be. Maybe words were spoken that still hurt. Maybe there has been distance or misunderstanding. Maybe you love someone deeply but recognize that healthy boundaries are necessary right now. Bring that relationship to God.
You don't have to pretend it didn't hurt. You don't have to force restoration before trust has been rebuilt. But you can ask God to keep bitterness from taking root in your heart. Family isn't perfect. Mine isn't. Yours isn't. Joseph's certainly wasn't. Yet imperfect families are still places where God's grace can do extraordinary work.
Family doesn't have to be perfect for God's grace to be present. Forgiveness can heal the heart, and when hearts are willing, grace can begin rebuilding what hurt tried to destroy.
Pearl's Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
You know our families completely, the love we share and the places that still hurt. Where there has been misunderstanding, bring clarity. Where there has been hurt, bring healing. Where forgiveness is needed, soften our hearts.
Give us wisdom to know when to speak, when to listen, when boundaries are necessary, and when to take a step toward reconciliation. Keep bitterness from settling into our hearts, and remind us that our pain does not have the final word. You do. Where restoration is possible, give us the grace and courage to begin.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
