"I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for He hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, He hath covered me with the robe of righteousness..." Isaiah 61:10
Have you ever looked back on a decision and wished you could change it? Have you ever carried the weight of a mistake longer than God intended you to? Have you ever wondered if others see you by your failures, your past, your labels, or your regrets? Perhaps the harder question is this: How do you see yourself?
Many of us spend years wearing garments God never intended for us to wear. We wrap ourselves in guilt over words we wish we hadn't spoken. We carry shame from choices we wish we could undo. We wear disappointment when life doesn't unfold the way we planned. Sometimes we become so accustomed to these garments that we forget they were never ours to keep.
The other day, I was sorting through the coat closet and came across a jacket I had not worn in years. It no longer fit who I am today, yet there it hung, taking up space among the things I wear regularly. As I pulled it from the hanger, I thought about how often we do the same thing spiritually. We hold on to old identities, old failures, old hurts, and old labels long after God has offered us something new.
A beautiful picture of salvation is painted in Isaiah 61:10. He says God has clothed us with garments of salvation and covered us with a robe of righteousness. Notice that God is the One doing the clothing. We do not weave this robe ourselves. We do not earn it through perfect behavior or flawless living. It is a gift of grace.
I am also reminded of Joshua the high priest in Zechariah 3:1-5. He stood before God wearing filthy garments, a symbol of sin and brokenness. Yet God instructed that the filthy garments be removed and replaced with clean ones. Joshua did not clean himself first. God did the cleansing. God did the restoring. God provided the new garment. What a powerful reminder for us.
There are seasons when the enemy would rather keep us focused on the clothes we used to wear, failure, regret, fear, inadequacy, rejection. But God continually invites us to exchange those garments for something better. He offers forgiveness instead of guilt. Mercy instead of shame. Hope instead of despair.
The truth is, many of us are trying to walk into a new season wearing old clothes. Yet God says, "Let Me clothe you." The robe of righteousness is more than forgiveness; it is identity. It is God's declaration that your past is not your permanent address. It is His assurance that you are covered by His grace and loved beyond measure.
Today, perhaps the question is not whether God is willing to cover you. The question is whether you are willing to let go of the garments you've been carrying. You do not have to wear yesterday's failures into today's opportunities. God has already provided a robe of righteousness. Leave the old garments behind and walk in the grace He has prepared for you.
Pearl's Prayer:
Father, thank You for covering me with Your grace. Help me to release the labels, the regrets, and failures I continue to carry. Teach me to see myself through Your eyes and to walk confidently in the righteousness You have provided through Christ.
Amen.
When God clothes you in righteousness, He is not covering who you are, He is revealing whose you are.
