"But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light." 1 Peter 2:9 (KJV)
I have learned that one of the hardest things in life is not making decisions. It is making decisions when you are no longer sure which voice to trust. We live in a world filled with opinions. Everyone seems to have a perspective on how we should live, what we should believe, and what should matter most. The values we once considered steady often seem to shift with each passing season. In the middle of all that noise, it is easy to lose our bearings.
Perhaps that is why Peter's words have been speaking to my heart lately. When Peter wrote these words, he was writing to believers whose lives had been disrupted. They were scattered, facing hardship, and trying to remain faithful in a culture that often opposed their beliefs. Before Peter told them how to live, he reminded them who they were. "You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own special people." In other words, before focusing on their circumstances, they needed to remember their identity.
As I reflected on this passage, I thought about a season in my own life when I felt God leading me back to school. From a practical standpoint, it didn't make much sense. I had children at home, responsibilities pulling me in every direction, and more than enough reasons to stay where I was. There were moments when doubt whispered that I was too old or that the opportunity had passed. Yet deep within my heart, I felt God calling me forward.
Looking back, I realize the decision was never simply about education. It was about trust. Would I allow my circumstances to determine my future, or would I trust the God who had been directing my steps all along?
Had I listened only to fear, I might have remained where I was. Instead, I chose to follow where God was leading, believing that my future was not determined by my limitations but by the One to whom I belonged.
The story of Gideon comes to mind. When we meet Gideon in Judges 6, he is hiding in a winepress, fearful and uncertain. Yet the angel of the Lord greets him with these words: "The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valour." (Judges 6:12)
Gideon saw a frightened farmer. God saw a mighty warrior. Gideon focused on his circumstances. God focused on his identity. The more I read Scripture, the more I realize that God often speaks to who we are becoming while we are still focused on where we are standing.
That truth matters today. Many people are wrestling with purpose, navigating life changes, making difficult decisions, and trying to find direction in a world that often seems to have lost its moral compass. Some are facing retirement. Others are adjusting to an empty nest, caring for aging parents, or wondering what their next season will hold.
In times like these, 1 Peter 2:9 serves as a spiritual compass. A compass does not remove obstacles from the journey. It simply keeps pointing in the right direction.
Peter's words do the same. When culture changes, God has not changed. When opinions shift, God has not shifted. When circumstances become uncertain, God's declaration remains the same: You are chosen. You belong to Him. You are called. You are His.
So if life feels uncertain today, pause for a moment and remember. Remember whose voice defines you. Remember whose hand guides you. Remember whose promises sustain you. And above all, remember whose you are.
Pearl's Prayer:
Father, when the voices around me grow loud and life feels uncertain, help me remember who I am in You. Keep my heart anchored in Your truth when the world around me shifts. Remind me that I belong to You, that I am chosen, called, and loved. Help me trust Your voice above every other voice and follow where You lead.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
I am the Vessel, God is the Grace
