“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life…” Psalm 23:6
The other day, I heard the words, “I will sing of the goodness of God,” and something in my spirit paused. Certain songs do more than fill a room with music, they awaken memories.
As the lyrics played, my mind drifted through seasons of my life: moments of uncertainty, prayers whispered through tears, doors that closed unexpectedly, and days when I carried burdens quietly while still trying to appear strong. Yet through every season, one truth remained constant:
God was faithful.
Sometimes the goodness of God is easier to recognize looking backward than while we are walking through difficult places. In the middle of hardship, we often focus on what is delayed, painful, or unclear. But later, when we pause and reflect, we begin to notice how God carried us through moments that could have completely overwhelmed us.
David understood this when he wrote Psalm 23. He did not say goodness would appear once in a while. He said goodness and mercy would follow him all the days of his life. Even in valleys. Even in uncertainty. Even in seasons of fear. That means there has never been a single day when God’s goodness stopped reaching toward us.
I think about stained glass windows in an old church. When you stand close to them, all you can see are broken fragments, sharp edges, uneven shapes, scattered colors that seem disconnected and random. Up close, it can look messy. But when the sunlight shines through, something beautiful happens. The broken pieces begin to glow. What once looked shattered becomes a masterpiece filled with color, light, and meaning.
Isn’t that how God works in our lives? There are seasons that feel broken. Moments we wish we could remove from our story entirely. Losses we did not understand. Delays that frustrated us. Heartbreaks that changed us. Yet somehow, in the hands of God, even the broken pieces become part of something beautiful. His goodness shines through places we once thought were ruined.
Looking back now, I can see moments where His goodness protected me from things I once prayed for. I can see how unanswered prayers carried hidden mercy. I can see how difficult seasons deepened my faith and taught me to depend on Him more fully.
Not every chapter of life feels good while we are living it. But faith teaches us to trust that God is still good even when life feels uncertain. When we pause long enough to reflect, gratitude begins to rise. Not because life was easy. Not because every prayer unfolded the way we hoped. But because through it all, God never left us.
So today, I choose to sing. Not because every battle is over, but because I have seen too much of God’s faithfulness to stay silent now.
What broken pieces of your life has God allowed His light to shine through?
Pearl's Prayer:
Father, thank You for Your goodness that continues to shine through every season of my life. Thank You for taking broken moments and using them for beauty, growth, and purpose. Help me trust You when I cannot yet understand the full picture. Let Your light shine through every part of my story so others may see Your faithfulness.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
I am the Vessel, God is the Grace.
