A Pearls of Grace Devotional Series Through The Book of Habakkuk

“When I heard, my belly trembled; my lips quivered at the voice…”  Habakkuk 3:16

By the time we reach chapter three, something inside Habakkuk has changed. The questions have not completely disappeared. The situation around him has not suddenly improved. The uncertainty is still real. But now, instead of only questioning God, Habakkuk begins remembering Him.

He remembers God’s power. God’s faithfulness. God’s ability to deliver. God’s presence through past storms. And in remembering, his perspective begins to shift. That is important because fear has a way of shrinking our vision. When life feels uncertain, we can become consumed by what is wrong, what is delayed, or what feels unstable around us. Current events, personal struggles, family burdens, financial pressures, and emotional exhaustion can slowly drain our hope if we stare at them too long without lifting our eyes toward God.

Habakkuk understood fear. He admitted openly that his body trembled. Even faithful people experience moments where anxiety, grief, or uncertainty shakes them deeply. But chapter three teaches us something powerful: faith is not the absence of trembling. Faith is continuing to trust God while trembling.

I think about storms that move through large trees. Strong winds cause branches to sway violently, yet deeply rooted trees remain standing because their strength is hidden beneath the surface. The roots hold what the storm tries to shake. Prayer and faith work similarly. When our roots grow deeply in God, we may bend under pressure, but we do not completely break.

Habakkuk reached a place where he realized that his confidence could no longer rest in circumstances alone. Crops could fail. Nations could rise and fall. Hardship could still come. Yet God remained steady through it all. Perhaps that is what many of us are learning in this season too.

We cannot anchor our peace only to favorable outcomes. We must anchor ourselves to the unchanging character of God. Because life changes quickly.
Circumstances shift suddenly. But God remains faithful.

Habakkuk’s prayer slowly transforms from fear into surrender. Often that is where spiritual maturity begins, not when every question is answered, but when trust becomes greater than fear. What fears or uncertainties have been shaking your heart lately? Have you been focusing more on the storm around you than the God who remains with you within it?

Pearls Prayer:

Lord, when fear rises within us, remind us of Your faithfulness. Help us remember the ways You have carried us before so that we do not lose hope in difficult seasons. Strengthen the roots of our faith so that even when life shakes around us, we remain grounded in You. Teach us to trust You not only when life feels stable, but also in moments when our hearts tremble.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

I am the Vessel, God is the Grace.
