"God Is My Refuge"

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
Psalm 46:1

Have you ever felt like everything around you is shifting and you’re trying to find something that won’t move? The conversations feel heavier lately. The headlines feel closer. The uncertainty doesn’t feel distant anymore, it feels personal.

You hear people talking about preparation. Stocking up. Planning ahead. Getting ready.... “just in case.” While wisdom tells us to be mindful, your spirit quietly asks a deeper question.  Where is my refuge? Scripture answers that question with both clarity and comfort. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1 . Not will be. Not might become. But, is.

There is something deeply settling about that word. It’s not always the storm itself that unsettles us, it’s the feeling that we are facing it alone. Psalm 46 does not deny the reality of chaos. In fact, it names it boldly: “Though the earth be removed… Though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea… Though the waters roar…” (Psalm 46:2–3).

This is not a gentle storm. This is everything that feels unshakable, suddenly shaking. Yet, right in the middle of that imagery, comes a quiet but powerful declaration: “Therefore will not we fear.” Not because nothing is happening. But because God is present in what is happening. That shifts everything. Refuge is not the absence of trouble. Refuge is the presence of God within it.

I find myself reflecting on how easy it is to prepare externally, to gather what we think we might need, to brace for what could come. This Psalm gently calls us inward. It reminds us that before anything else, we are to be anchored, not anxious.

Then comes the instruction that feels almost out of place in a world that says “move quickly”. “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10). Be still. Not because nothing is happening, but because God is already in control of what is. Stillness is not weakness. It is trust. It is the quiet confidence that says, “I may not understand everything unfolding around me, but I know who is holding me within it.”

Today, as you move through your day, through conversations, responsibilities, and even quiet concerns, let this truth settle in your spirit. God is not distant from your reality.
He is your refuge in it. Not after it passes. Not once things settle. But right now.

The greatest preparation we can make in uncertain times, is not just what we gather in our hands but what we anchor in our hearts. When everything around you feels like it could shift at any moment, remember this.  Your safety is not found in what you can control but in the God who controls everything and who never changes.

Pearl's Prayer:

Lord, When life feels uncertain, remind me that You are my refuge. Calm my thoughts and steady my heart. Teach me to be still and trust You, knowing You are present in every moment. Cover me with Your peace, strengthen me where I am weak, and help me rest in You.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
