“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace…meekness, temperance.” Galatians 5:22–23
Most of the choices affecting my wellness do not arrive with a warning sign. They appear quietly in ordinary moments. Do I need another helping, or have I had enough? Do I stay up scrolling, even though my body is asking for rest? Do I keep pushing through exhaustion, or give myself permission to pause? Do I hold on to a troubling thought until it consumes my day, or release it to God?
None of these decisions seems particularly important by itself. Yet, little by little, they become habits and our habits have a way of shaping our health.
The Bible calls temperance a fruit of the Spirit. Many translations use the words self-control. For a long time, I thought self-control was mainly about having enough discipline to tell myself no. If I were strong enough, determined enough, or committed enough, I would always make the right choice.
But I am learning that biblical temperance is not simply gritting my teeth and trying harder. It is allowing the Holy Spirit to help me choose what brings life, health, and peace.
Paul wrote, “All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any” (1 Corinthians 6:12). That last phrase speaks to me: I will not be brought under the power of any.
There is a difference between enjoying something and being controlled by it. Food can be enjoyed without becoming our comfort for every disappointment. Work can be meaningful without consuming all our energy. Exercise can strengthen the body without becoming an obsession. Rest can restore us without becoming an excuse never to move. Even our thoughts must be watched because worry can quietly take control of places where peace once lived.
Temperance invites me to ask, Is this helping me, or is it beginning to control me?That is not always an easy question. Sometimes I already know the answer, but I do not want to admit it. Other times, the answer requires patience and honest reflection. What is healthy for one person may not look exactly the same for another. The goal is not to live under constant guilt or to measure ourselves against someone else. The goal is to become more attentive to God’s guidance.
At this stage of my life, I am more aware that my body responds to how I treat it. Rest matters. Movement matters. Nourishment matters. What I allow to settle in my mind matters. I will not make every choice perfectly, but perfection is not what God is asking of me. He is inviting me to remain close enough to Him that His Spirit can guide my decisions.
What encourages me is that God does not leave me alone with my appetites, impulses, and habits. His Spirit meets me in the moment of decision, between the desire and the response and gives me space to pause, listen, and choose wisely. Self-control may be expressed through my choices, but its strength comes from God working within me.
Today, I am grateful that God does not merely give me a list of things to avoid. He gives me something better, the grace to choose. The grace to pause. The grace to say no when something is harmful and yes when something will strengthen me.
Sometimes wellness begins with one quiet decision: This is good, but I have had enough. This is comfortable, but it is not helping me. This has controlled me long enough, and with God’s help, I can choose differently.
In our next Wellness Wednesday, we will look more closely at one place where temperance can become difficult, the connection between sugar, stress, and our search for comfort.
Pearl's Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the gift of choice. Show me where my habits are strengthening me and where they may be controlling me. Grow the fruit of temperance within me. Give me wisdom to recognize what I need, courage to release what is harmful, and grace when I fall short. Help me make choices that honor the life You have entrusted to me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
