"As soon as the priests who carry the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, set foot in the Jordan, its waters flowing downstream will be cut off and stand up in a heap." Joshua 3:13 (NIV)
Have you ever hurt so much that you didn't want to move? Have you ever felt stiff, tired, sore, or discouraged and thought, "Maybe I'll just sit this one out today?" Have you ever waited to feel better before taking the next step? Today that was me, my body was hurting.
Every movement felt difficult. My muscles were tight, my joints were aching, and the easiest thing to do would have been nothing at all. I told myself I would feel better if I rested. Yet deep down, I knew my body needed something different. It needed movement.
So I moved. Not because I felt strong. Not because it was easy. Not because the pain had disappeared. I moved because I knew my body was designed for movement. So for fifty minutes, I stretched, exercised, and worked up a sweat. As I moved, my blood began to flow. My muscles loosened. My body started responding. By the time I finished, the aches had not completely disappeared, but something had changed. I felt better.
As I reflected on the experience, I realized my body was teaching my spirit a lesson. How often do we approach life the same way? We wait until we feel stronger before moving forward. We wait until we are less afraid before taking a step of faith. We wait until the pain lessens, the grief lifts, the uncertainty clears, or the motivation returns. Yet God often calls us to move while we are still hurting.
The Israelites faced a similar moment when they arrived at the Jordan River. The waters stood between them and the Promised Land. God could have parted the river before they arrived. Instead, He instructed the priests carrying the ark to step into the water first. The miracle did not happen while they stood on the shore. The waters parted when they moved.
What a powerful lesson for us. Sometimes healing begins with movement. Sometimes strength comes after the first step. Sometimes clarity comes after we begin. Sometimes God meets us in motion. This is true physically and spiritually. Our bodies need movement to remain healthy. Our hearts need movement to remain faithful. We cannot allow discomfort, fear, disappointment, or even physical aches to convince us to remain stuck.
Today reminded me that movement is a gift from God. Every step, every stretch, every drop of sweat is a reminder that this body is still capable of carrying me forward. It may not move as quickly as it once did. It may ache more than it used to. But it is still a gift worthy of care and stewardship.
Perhaps there is an area of your life where you have been waiting to feel better before moving forward. Maybe God is gently whispering, "Move anyway." Take the walk. Say the prayer. Make the call. Begin again. Trust again. The pain may not disappear immediately. The path may not suddenly become easy. But you may discover what I discovered today: sometimes the very thing we resist is the very thing God uses to bring relief. Move anyway.
Pearl's Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of movement and the lessons You teach us through everyday experiences. Help us not to become stuck by fear, discomfort, or discouragement. Give us wisdom to care for our bodies and courage to keep moving forward in faith. Remind us that You often meet us in the steps we take toward You. Strengthen us for the journey and help us trust You even when the path is uncomfortable.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
