Did the Word Change Me?

“And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.” 1 John 2:17

As this week begins to settle, I have been thinking about all the ways God’s Word comes to me. I may hear it in a sermon, read it during my quiet time, or see a verse that seems to speak directly to what I am going through. Sometimes I underline it or write it down because I do not want to forget it.

But then life keeps moving. A conversation becomes difficult. My patience wears thin. Someone disappoints me, or something does not go the way I expected. That is usually when I discover whether the Word stayed on the page or made its way into my heart.

James says, “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only” (James 1:22). I used to hear that verse mainly as a warning. Today, it feels more like a loving invitation. It is as though God is gently saying, “Do not leave My Word on the page. Take it with you into your conversations, your reactions, and your choices. Let Me show you what it looks like to live it.”

James compares the Word to a mirror. That image feels so practical to me. When I look into a mirror and see that something needs attention, I do not blame the mirror. I make an adjustment. In much the same way, God’s Word may show me an attitude I need to surrender, an apology I need to offer, or an act of kindness I have been putting off. The mirror is not there to shame me. It helps me see clearly.

Then John reminds us that the world and its desires are passing away. Those words can sound heavy, but I believe they are meant to help us remember what truly lasts. The need to be right, the desire to be noticed, the pull to have everything go my way, none of these things will last. Yet every time I choose God’s way, something eternal is being formed within me.

This is not about earning God’s love or trying to prove that I am spiritual. Grace has already met me. Obedience is simply one of the ways that grace begins to show in my life.

The story of the Good Samaritan comes to mind. He did not give a speech about compassion. He stopped. He drew near. He allowed another person’s pain to interrupt his plans. He put mercy into motion. To me, that is what it looks like when the Word grows hands and feet.

So, as this week closes, I am asking myself a gentler question, not, “Did I do everything perfectly?” but, “Did I allow God’s Word to change anything in me?” Maybe I paused before speaking. Maybe I forgave, helped, listened, or admitted that I was wrong. These choices may seem small, but they are signs of God’s transforming power at work. And if I missed the moment, grace does not push me away. It invites me to begin again.

Pearl's Prayer:

Father, thank You for speaking to me through Your Word. Help me carry what I hear into the way I live. When You show me something that needs attention, give me a willing heart and the courage to respond. Let Your grace be seen in my words, choices, and treatment of others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

This is such a good word. Has God’s word changed us. I pray that when I look back my answer can be yes.
