The Hush of His Presence

“Be still, and know that I am God.”  Psalm 46:10

At the end of the week, sometimes the best thing we can do is sit still long enough to notice where we are. Today, I found myself surrounded by greenery, trees full and alive, leaves moving gently in the breeze, and water flowing from a lake that had received so much rain. I sat and listened.

“The water fell with a deep, resounding rush, a steady, soothing roar that filled the air and seemed to quiet everything within me.”  It carried a soft, gentle hush as it fell and continued its journey downstream.

Hush. That is the word that stayed with me. There was the hush of the water. The hush of the wind brushing against the tree limbs. The hush-hush sound of leaves meeting and greeting one another as the breeze moved through them. Nothing was demanding my attention, yet everything seemed to be inviting me to pay attention. And somewhere in that quiet moment, I became aware again of the presence of God.

Sometimes we look for God in the extraordinary. We wait for something dramatic to happen, a prayer suddenly answered, a door unexpectedly opened, a miracle we cannot explain. But God also makes Himself known in quieter ways. In the movement of leaves. In the sound of water. In the coolness of a breeze against our skin. In the simple privilege of sitting still at the end of a long week and realizing, I made it here. God carried me here.

Scripture says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handiwork.”  Psalm 19:1.  Creation has a way of reminding us that God is near. After a week filled with responsibilities, conversations, decisions, concerns, and things that may still be unresolved, nature quietly whispers something our souls sometimes need to hear: You can rest now.

Everything does not have to be figured out tonight. Every problem does not have to be solved before the sun goes down.  Every burden does not have to cross over into your Sabbath rest. The water keeps flowing. The trees keep standing. The wind keeps moving. And God keeps being God. What a beautiful way to end the week. What a beautiful way to begin the Sabbath. To simply sit in the middle of God’s creation and recognize that His presence has been around us all along. Maybe the hush of nature is God’s gentle invitation:  Be still.  Breathe. Listen. Rest.

The week may have been busy. There may have been moments that stretched you, worried you, or left you wondering how everything would work out. But you are here. And before you rush into another thought, another responsibility, or another concern, take a moment to notice the evidence of God around you. Listen to the water. Watch the leaves. Feel the wind. Let creation remind you: The same God who keeps the water flowing, the trees growing, and the wind moving has been keeping you too.

Sometimes God’s presence does not come with thunder. Sometimes it comes in a hush. A gentle breeze. Falling water. Moving leaves. And a quiet reminder: I am here.

Pearl's Prayer:

Lord, thank You for the quiet reminders of Your presence all around me. As this week comes to an end, help me release what I cannot control and rest in the assurance that You are still God. Quiet my heart, refresh my spirit, and teach me to recognize You even in the hush. Amen.
