"And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;" John 14:16 (KJV)
When I pause to look back over the past several days, I realize how many things changed. Conversations ended. Plans shifted. Some prayers were answered, while others are still waiting. There were moments that brought joy and moments that quietly tested my patience and faith. Like every week, there were beginnings and endings.
Life has a way of reminding us that much of what we experience is temporary. Meetings adjourn. Visitors leave. Children grow up. Seasons change. Even some of the people we expected to journey with us for years eventually walk a different path. But as I reflected on this week, one thought settled gently into my heart: through every moment, God stayed.
Before Jesus went to the cross, He knew His disciples would soon experience confusion, grief, and what would feel like abandonment. Yet before they ever faced those difficult days, He gave them a promise: "And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever" (John 14:16, KJV). Those words were more than comfort for the disciples. They are a promise for us today. Jesus did not promise a life without trials. He promised we would never face them alone.
There have been seasons in my own life when people I thought would always be there were no longer part of the journey. There were doors that closed unexpectedly, relationships that changed, and dreams that unfolded differently than I had imagined. Yet when I look back now, I do not remember walking those roads by myself. I remember God's quiet faithfulness. He strengthened me when I felt weak, gave me wisdom when I didn't know what to do, and surrounded me with His peace when my heart struggled to understand. Looking back, I realize it wasn't my strength that carried me. It was the presence of the Comforter, faithfully walking beside me every step of the way.
Perhaps that is one of the greatest gifts of reflection. We begin to recognize God's fingerprints on moments we barely noticed while we were living through them. The conversation where He gave us the right words. The difficult decision where His wisdom became clear. The burden that somehow became lighter. The unexpected peace that settled over our hearts. We may not have recognized it in the moment, but the Holy Spirit was quietly doing what Jesus promised He would do, abiding with us.
The word Comforter comes from the Greek word Paraklētos, meaning one who comes alongside to help, encourage, strengthen, and advocate. Jesus wasn't promising occasional visits from God's Spirit. He was promising continual companionship. The Holy Spirit doesn't simply meet us at the end of the journey; He faithfully walks with us through every step of it.
As another week comes to a close, perhaps the most important question isn't, What did I accomplish? Instead, we might ask, Where did I see God's faithfulness? Sometimes His faithfulness is found in answered prayers. Sometimes it is found in the strength to endure. Sometimes it is found in the quiet assurance that, although much around us has changed, His presence has not.
As we step into a new week, we do so with confidence, not because we know what lies ahead, but because we know the One who has promised to remain with us forever. The week may have ended, but His faithfulness has not.
Pearl's Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for being the One who never leaves. Thank You for Your faithfulness through every joy, every challenge, and every ordinary moment of this week. As we enter a new week, help us recognize Your presence, trust Your guidance, and rest in the promise that Your Spirit abides with us always.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
