“And Saul sought him every day, but God delivered him not into his hand.” 1 Samuel 23:14, KJV
There is something about this verse that made me stop. Saul was looking for David every day. Not occasionally. Not when he happened to think about him. Every day. David was living in the wilderness, moving from place to place, knowing that someone was actively trying to find him. And then the Bible slips in three words: But God delivered.
What catches my attention is what God did not do. He did not immediately remove Saul. He did not suddenly give David a peaceful life. He did not explain how long the situation would last. Saul kept searching. But he never got David.
That made me think about the things in my own life that never happened. As a mother raising five sons, I prayed many prayers. Some were specific. Some were probably nothing more than, “Lord, please watch over my children.” I know about the situations they came home and told me about. I know about the difficulties we walked through together. But sometimes I wonder about the things I will never know.
The accident that didn't happen. The wrong turn they didn't take. The person they never encountered. The decision that changed at the last minute. The danger God may have blocked before I ever knew there was something to be afraid of. We usually recognize God by what He gives us. The answer. The open door. The healing. The opportunity. But David's story reminds me that sometimes God's presence may be seen in what never reached us.
Saul sought him every day. But God.Those words leave room for possibilities I cannot see. Maybe the delay I complained about protected me from something I wasn't ready for. Maybe the door that closed was not rejection at all. Maybe the plan that changed interrupted something I never knew was coming. Maybe some of what I have called inconvenience was actually mercy.
I cannot say that every disappointment is God's protection. Sometimes things simply hurt, and we may never understand why. But I am beginning to realize that my view of God's care has often been limited to the things I can identify. There may be an entire side of grace I know nothing about.
Psalm 121:7 says, “The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.” Preserve.......Keep.......Guard. Those are quiet words. They don't always come with an announcement. Perhaps that is what stays with me most about David's story. He may not have known every time Saul came close. He only knew that somehow, day after day, he was still there.
Maybe that is worth noticing in our own lives. There are prayers God answered that we remember clearly. And then there may be answers we will never know enough to thank Him for. Things that almost happened. Things that could have happened. Things we never even saw coming. But God. Sometimes grace is not only what God brings into our lives. Sometimes grace is what He never allows to reach us.
Pearl's Prayer:
Lord, thank You not only for the blessings I can see, but for the ways You have cared for me that I may never fully know. Help me recognize that Your hand may be working even when nothing around me appears to be changing. In Jesus' name, Amen.
I am the Vessel, God is the Grace
