Led by the Hand

“And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: but they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus.”  Acts 9:8, KJV

It is often easier for me to offer help than to receive it. I am comfortable being the one who remembers, organizes, encourages and finds a way forward. But when I am the one who needs assistance, I hesitate. I do not want to inconvenience anyone, appear incapable or admit that I cannot manage everything on my own.

Saul began his journey to Damascus as the man in charge. He carried letters giving him authority to arrest the followers of Jesus. Saul rose from the ground with his eyes open, but he could not see. The man who had come with authority could not continue without assistance. Scripture says his companions “led him by the hand” into Damascus.

Those few words hold such a tender picture. Saul had to reach for someone. He had to trust the hands of people who, only moments earlier, had been following him. Whatever he may have felt, he allowed himself to be led.

I have spent much of my life being responsible for others, raising children, working, serving in ministry and handling whatever needed to be handled. After years of carrying the load and solving problems, strength can become part of how we see ourselves. Then comes a moment when we cannot manage alone.

I learned something about receiving while running marathons. No matter how well I had trained, I could not complete the race without what others provided along the course. Volunteers stood ready with cups of water. I did not stop to ask whether accepting a cup made me look weak. I reached for it because my body needed what someone else was there to give. Taking the cup did not erase my preparation. It supported it.

Sometimes strength looks like pressing forward. At other times, strength looks like accepting the hand extended toward us. Receiving also requires grace. It asks us to release control, admit a need and allow another person to help. That can be uncomfortable when we are accustomed to being dependable.

Yet Saul did not become less valuable when he needed someone to hold his hand. His temporary dependence did not erase his calling or cancel what God would do through his life. For those steps into Damascus, the help of others was part of God’s care for him.

Maybe you are the person everyone calls when something needs to be done. But lately, you may be the one who needs a ride, a meal, an encouraging conversation or someone to sit quietly beside you. Receiving that kindness does not make you a burden. It makes you human.

Perhaps there is another side to consider. When we refuse help, we may unintentionally prevent someone else from expressing the love God has placed in their heart. The hand reaching toward us may belong to someone who needs the opportunity to serve just as much as we need their support.

Saul arrived in Damascus differently than he expected, not as the powerful man leading others, but as a man allowing others to lead him. Still, he arrived exactly where he needed to be. If a hand is being extended toward you today, you do not have to apologize for needing it. Reach for it. God’s provision sometimes comes through another person’s hands.

Pearl's Prayer:

Lord, thank You for the people You place beside me. Help me recognize when pride, fear or embarrassment keeps me from receiving their care or receiving your blessing. Give me the humility to accept help and remind me that needing another person does not diminish my worth. Teach me to receive with the same grace with which I try to give. In Jesus' name, Amen.

I am The Vessel, God is The Grace

Your message reminds me that God knows my needs better than I do. Sadly, we may have to be knocked down and blinded in order to see God’s directives.

I thought this story of Saul is indicative of an oxymoron. A man is made blind physically in order to know Jesus spiritually.
