Watching and Waiting in a Noisy World

“Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation.”               Matthew 26:41, KJV

Lately, I have noticed how quickly the noise around me can find its way inside me. I may turn on the news simply to see what is happening, but before long, I am carrying the weight of what I have heard. Add the opinions, warnings, conversations, and constant notifications, and my mind can become crowded before the day has truly begun.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to know what is happening in the world. But I have had to ask myself whether being informed is also leaving me distracted. Am I paying so much attention to the noise that I am no longer attentive to God?

Jesus told His disciples to watch. In Matthew 24:42, He said, “Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.” Later, in Gethsemane, He told them, “Watch and pray” (Matthew 26:41). Watching was more than looking at what was happening around them. It meant remaining spiritually awake, prayerful, and aware of their need for God.

That thought caused me to pause. Perhaps watching is not about trying to interpret every headline or predict what will happen next. Perhaps it is about noticing what has my attention and where my heart is resting. The world may be loud, but God is still speaking. The question is whether I am quiet enough to hear Him.

Waiting asks something different of me. Waiting means trusting God when the answer has not arrived and the direction is still unclear. Psalm 27:14 says, “Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart.” Isaiah 40:31 reminds us that those who wait upon the Lord will renew their strength.

I once thought waiting meant doing nothing. Now I am beginning to see it as a quiet act of faith. Waiting says, “God, I do not understand what You are doing, but I still believe You are in control.”

Watching and waiting belong together. Watching keeps my heart awake. Waiting keeps my heart from running ahead of God. One helps me remain attentive; the other helps me remain steady.

Some days, that may mean turning away from the news for a while and sitting quietly with Scripture. It may mean praying before sharing another troubling report or allowing another fearful thought to settle in my mind. It may simply mean reminding myself that the headlines do not have the final word. God does.

There is much happening around us, and I do not want to be unaware of the times in which we are living. But neither do I want the noise of these times to pull my attention away from the One who holds time in His hands.

So I am learning to watch without becoming afraid and to wait without losing heart. I may not know what tomorrow will bring, but I can remain prayerful, attentive, and grounded in the truth that God is still in control.

Pearl's Prayer:

Lord, quiet the noise within me. Help me to remain spiritually awake without becoming anxious about everything happening around me. Teach me to watch prayerfully, wait faithfully, and keep my heart centered on You. When I cannot see what You are doing, help me trust that You are still in control. In Jesus' name, Amen.

What a powerful reframe.” So I am learning to watch without becoming afraid and to wait without losing heart. I may not know what tomorrow will bring, but I can remain prayerful, attentive, and grounded in the truth that God is still in control.” I needed this message this morning.
