Guard What Grace Has Given You

“Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called.”  1 Timothy 6:12

When I began running marathons at sixty, I quickly learned that reaching the finish line required more than excitement at the starting line. I had to keep moving when my body became tired, when the road felt longer than expected, and when my mind started questioning whether I could finish. Faith can feel that way too.

In 1 Timothy 6, Paul tells Timothy to “fight the good fight of faith.” He was not calling Timothy into a physical battle. He was preparing him for the inner struggle of remaining faithful when other voices, desires, and distractions attempted to pull him away from his calling.

Paul told him to pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and gentleness. These qualities do not always develop easily. Sometimes we must fight to remain patient. We must fight to respond with gentleness. We must fight to keep believing when circumstances make us question what God is doing. The fight of faith is not a fight to make God love us. It is the daily decision to hold on to the God who already does.

Paul also speaks directly to those who have wealth. He does not condemn them for having possessions. Instead, he tells them not to become proud or place their trust in “uncertain riches.” Money can change. Opportunities can disappear. The things that make us feel secure today may not be present tomorrow. God, however, remains faithful.

Those who have been blessed are instructed to be rich in good works, generous, and willing to share. This reminded me that God’s blessings were never intended to stop with us. Whatever He places in our hands, our resources, testimony, gifts, experience, or influence, can become a channel of grace to someone else.

Paul closes the chapter with a personal appeal: “O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust.” I can almost hear the tenderness in those words: Timothy, protect what God has placed within you. Do not become distracted. Do not allow competing voices to make you forget your assignment.

Those words speak to me too. God has entrusted each of us with something. It may be a ministry, a family, a gift, a testimony, an opportunity, or the ability to encourage another person. We must hold these blessings with open hands so God can use them, while guarding our hearts against anything that would cause us to misuse or abandon them.

There will be days when the journey feels difficult. But just as a runner keeps the finish line in view, we can keep our eyes on Christ. We are not running alone, and we are not fighting in our own strength. The grace that called us is also the grace that will carry us. Guard your calling, hold your blessings with open hands, and keep moving forward in faith.

Pearl's Prayer:

Lord, thank You for everything You have entrusted to me. Help me guard my faith, remain faithful to my calling, and use my blessings to serve others. When I become tired or distracted, turn my attention back to You. Give me the strength to fight the good fight and finish my journey faithfully. In Jesus’ name, amen.

I am the Vessel. God is the Grace.
