Training for What God Has Called You to Do

“Exercise thyself rather unto godliness.”  1 Timothy 4:7

When I began running marathons at sixty, I quickly learned that I could not simply show up on race day and expect my body to carry me twenty-six miles. The desire to finish was important, but desire alone was not enough. I had to train. Training meant running when I felt motivated and when I did not. It meant building endurance gradually and continuing even when progress seemed slow. Every mile was preparing me for a part of the journey I had not yet reached.

As I read 1 Timothy 4, Paul’s words to Timothy made me think about that kind of preparation. Paul told him, “Exercise thyself rather unto godliness.” When I read Paul’s words, I do not hear him saying that caring for our physical bodies is unimportant. He seems to be helping Timothy place it in perspective: physical training has value, but spiritual training reaches into every part of our lives and even into eternity (1 Timothy 4:8).

Timothy had already been called and gifted, yet Paul continued encouraging him to grow. He reminded him to stay close to Scripture, pay attention to his character, and keep developing the gift God had placed within him (1 Timothy 4:12–16). That speaks to me because being called does not mean we have finished growing. God continues preparing us as we walk with Him.

Sometimes we want to be spiritually strong when the crisis comes, but strength is usually developed before the crisis arrives. We want peace when life becomes uncertain, wisdom when a decision must be made, and faith when the road becomes difficult. Yet those qualities are often strengthened during the ordinary days we spend walking with God.

Prayer is part of the training. Reading God’s Word is part of the training. Learning to obey Him in small matters is part of the training. So is allowing Him to correct us, reshape our attitudes, and teach us how to treat people with love. None of this happens overnight.

When I trained for a marathon, one short run did not prepare me for race day. Strength came through consistency one mile, one decision, and one day at a time. Our spiritual lives grow in much the same way. Each time we choose prayer over panic, truth over fear, forgiveness over resentment, or obedience over convenience, our faith is being strengthened.

Timothy was young and carrying serious responsibility. Some people may have questioned whether he was ready to lead. Paul did not tell him to prove himself through a title or impressive words. Instead, he encouraged Timothy to become an example through his words, conduct, love, faith, and purity (1 Timothy 4:12). Timothy’s life was part of his preparation and part of his message.

That causes me to ask myself: Am I training for what I have been praying for? Am I allowing God to prepare my character for the places where He may send me? Or am I waiting for the assignment before becoming serious about the preparation?

Paul also told Timothy not to neglect the gift within him. That gift needed more than recognition; it needed attention and faithful use. The same is true for us. God may place the gift within us, but we must be willing to grow into it.

We do not have to become spiritually mature all at once. We simply have to keep showing up, returning to prayer, returning to God’s Word, and returning to His presence whenever we become distracted. The road ahead may require a strength we do not yet have. But perhaps God is using today’s quiet training to prepare us for tomorrow’s assignment.

Pearl's Prayer:

Lord, help me remain faithful in the quiet places of preparation. Strengthen my faith, shape my character, and teach me to walk closely with You each day. Prepare me for whatever You are calling me to do, and let my life always point others toward You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
