A New Season, A New Grace

There is something about the end of summer that always makes me pause. The days begin to feel a little different. Vacations are winding down, school supplies are being purchased, backpacks are being filled, and families are beginning to settle back into routines. Soon the school buses will be moving through our neighborhoods again, and another season will officially begin.

I sometimes find myself wondering, How did summer go by so quickly?  But life has a way of reminding us that seasons change whether we are ready for them or not. Some seasons give us time to rest. Some allow us to grow. Some stretch us. And some simply invite us to begin again.

As I thought about our children, grandchildren, teachers, parents, and school communities preparing for this new school year, I was reminded of Israel standing at the Jordan River in Joshua 3. They were getting ready to enter unfamiliar territory. God told them to follow His leading because, “ye have not passed this way heretofore” (Joshua 3:4).

I love that picture. They had never walked that road before. They did not know everything they would encounter on the other side of the river. They did not have every detail worked out. But God did not ask them to know everything. He simply asked them to follow Him.

Isn’t that how many new seasons feel? A child may be walking into a new classroom. A teenager may be entering a new school. A teacher may be facing another year with new students and new challenges. A parent may quietly be wondering how everything will come together. And even those of us who are not returning to school may be entering a new season of our own.

There is excitement in new beginnings, but if we are truthful, there can also be a little uncertainty. What will this season bring? That is where grace meets us. We may not know what lies ahead, but we know the One who is already there. The same God who carried us through the summer will walk with us into the fall. The same grace that met us yesterday will meet us tomorrow.

Maybe that is what I want to hold onto as summer comes to an end. I don’t have to know everything this next season will bring. I only need to remember Who is leading me. Isaiah 43:19 says, “Behold, I will do a new thing.” Sometimes we become so focused on what is ending that we forget to look for what God may be beginning.

So perhaps this week we can release summer with gratitude. Thank God for the memories. Thank Him for the rest. Thank Him for the laughter, the family gatherings, the quiet moments, the travels, and even the lessons we did not expect to learn. And then turn toward this new season with hope.

As our children and grandchildren head back to school, let us cover them in prayer. Let us pray for their teachers, administrators, bus drivers, counselors, and everyone who will help shape their days. And let us remember this for ourselves as well: A new season does not mean we need a new God. He is still faithful. He is still leading. He is still present. And there will be new grace for this new season.

Lord, thank You for carrying us through another summer. As we enter this new season, go before our children, families, teachers, and school communities. Give peace where there is anxiety, wisdom where there is uncertainty, strength where there is weariness, and courage for every new beginning. Help us trust Your leading even when we have not passed this way before. Thank You for the grace that will meet us in this new season.  In Jesus' name, Amen.
