The Mind of Christ

Have you ever completed a task that no one noticed or served someone without receiving even a simple thank-you? Perhaps you gave your time, offered encouragement, or quietly handled something that needed to be done. When no recognition followed, did you begin to wonder whether your effort mattered?

We often ask God to change our circumstances, but Philippians 2 invites us to ask Him to change our minds. Paul tells us to have the same mind or attitude that Jesus had. Although Jesus possessed all power and authority, He chose the position of a servant. He did not use His greatness to place Himself above people. He used it to come near them, love them, serve them, and ultimately give His life for them.

Jesus touched people others avoided. He welcomed children when the disciples wanted to send them away. He washed His disciples’ feet even though He was their Lord. His humility was not weakness. It was strength completely surrendered to the will of His Father.

The world often teaches us to climb higher, become more important, and make certain that people recognize our value. Jesus shows us another way. He teaches us that greatness is not always found in being noticed. Sometimes greatness is revealed through the quiet choice to serve.

I have learned that serving feels different when no recognition follows. It is easy to serve when people are grateful, but it can be more difficult when our kindness is overlooked. In those moments, I must ask myself, “Am I serving for appreciation, or am I serving because God placed this assignment before me?” That question gently redirects my heart from the response of people to the approval of God.

Having the mind of Christ affects how we respond when we are overlooked, how we treat people who cannot do anything for us, and how willing we are to perform tasks that seem beneath us. It shapes what we do when no one is watching and no applause is coming.

This does not mean allowing ourselves to be used, disrespected, or harmed. Jesus’ humility was purposeful, not powerless. He knew who He was. Because His identity was secure in the Father, He did not have to prove His importance to anyone.

When we know who we are in God, we do not have to fight constantly for position. We can serve without feeling small. We can celebrate others without feeling threatened. We can obey God without needing everyone to understand.

Philippians 2 tells us that Jesus humbled Himself and became obedient even to death on the cross. Then God highly exalted Him. Jesus did not have to exalt Himself, the Father did it.

Perhaps God is asking you to serve someone who cannot repay you, release your need for recognition, or approach an ordinary responsibility with a different attitude. The assignment may not seem important, but your faithfulness matters to God. The mind of Christ does not ask, “How important can I become?” It asks, “How faithfully can I love and serve?”

Jesus, give me Your mind and shape my attitude. Help me serve without seeking recognition, obey without resisting, and love without keeping score. When my efforts are overlooked, remind me that You see every act of faithfulness. Let my life reflect Your humility, strength, and grace. Amen.
