When Faith Begins Small

Have you ever carried an idea in your heart without knowing how it would come together? That is how I felt when I began my gardening journey. I had a picture in my mind, but I lacked the money, skills, and complete plan to make it happen. I simply started with a small greenhouse that my husband and son assembled for me.

At first, the space held grow bags, pots and bags of seeds. Over time, family and friends helped us build garden beds, plant seeds and create a perimeter. Eventually, that small beginning grew into a flourishing garden with a larger, permanent greenhouse. As the garden developed, so did my understanding of seeds, soil, growing seasons, and the wonderful way God designed nature to work. The garden was growing, and God was growing me.

Looking at it now, I can hardly believe it began with one small idea and many unanswered questions. I did not have everything I needed. I simply began with what I had. Perhaps that is why Jesus’ words about mustard-seed faith mean so much to me.

In Matthew 17, a father came to Jesus carrying a need he could not resolve. The disciples had been unable to help, but disappointment did not stop him from approaching Jesus. He came with the faith he had and Jesus met him there. Later, when the disciples asked why they had been unable to help, Jesus spoke to them about faith the size of a mustard seed.

A mustard seed is tiny. It may not look impressive when held in your hand, but it is alive and filled with potential. Once planted, it begins growing beneath the soil before anything becomes visible above the ground.

Sometimes we think strong faith means having no questions, fears, or uncertainty. But faith is not knowing exactly how everything will work out. It is trusting God enough to take the next step. For me, that step was beginning with a little greenhouse.

For you, it may be completing an application, making a telephone call, returning to school, beginning a ministry, repairing a relationship, or trying again after disappointment. The step may appear small to others, but God knows what it took for you to make it. Mustard-seed faith is not a guarantee that everything will happen exactly as we imagined. It is the decision to keep trusting God with the outcome, even while we continue planting, working, learning, and waiting.

My garden did not grow overnight. There was soil to prepare, work to do, and much for me to learn. I planted and learned, but God provided the grace, the helping hands, the resources, the growth, and the wisdom that came along the way.

Perhaps you do not know where to begin. I understand that feeling. Start with what is already in your hands, and trust God with the part you cannot yet see. That is what I did with my little greenhouse, although I did not recognize it as mustard-seed faith at the time.

When I walk through my garden now, I do not just see plants, garden beds, and a greenhouse. I see evidence of God’s grace. What began as a small idea, surrounded by questions, became a living reminder that faith does not have to begin big, it simply has to begin. My heart can only say, “Thank You, Jesus. To God be the glory.”

Mustard-seed faith does not require us to see the entire garden. It simply gives us the courage to plant the first seed and trust God with the growth.

Lord, thank You for meeting me in small beginnings. When I cannot see how everything will come together, help me trust You enough to begin with what I have. Provide the wisdom, strength, and grace I need along the way. Grow my faith and use my small beginning for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, amen.
