“Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!” Psalm 34:8 (NKJV)
There are some things that simply cannot be explained, they must be experienced. Someone can describe a favorite meal with great detail, but until you taste it for yourself, you only know what you've been told. The same is true of God's goodness. We can hear sermons about His faithfulness, read testimonies, and listen to others describe what He has done. But there comes a moment when our own experiences become the evidence of His goodness.
David understood that. Psalm 34 was written after one of the most frightening seasons of his life. Fleeing from King Saul, David sought refuge in Gath, where he was recognized by his enemies. Afraid for his life, he pretended to be insane so they would let him go (1 Samuel 21:10–15). It was hardly a moment of triumph. It was a moment of fear, uncertainty, and desperation.
Yet after God delivered him, David looked back and wrote, "Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good." He wasn't repeating something he had heard. He was sharing what he had lived. He had tasted God's protection in danger, His mercy in weakness, and His faithfulness when he could not see the way forward. That is why he could also write: "I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears." Psalm 34:4 (NKJV)
Notice that David does not say he never experienced fear. He says God delivered him from his fears. Faith does not mean we never feel anxious or uncertain. It means we discover that God is greater than the fears we carry.
I've found that to be true in my own life. Looking back, I can see seasons when I questioned what God was doing. At the time, all I could see was the uncertainty. But as the years passed, I began to recognize His fingerprints all along the journey. He opened doors I couldn't have opened myself. He placed people in my path at just the right time. He gave strength for days when I had none left. His goodness was often quiet, but it was always present.
Sometimes we want proof before we trust God. We want the answer before we take the next step. But God often invites us to trust Him first. As we walk with Him, we begin to experience His faithfulness in ways no one else can describe for us.
Sometimes His goodness tastes like peace in the middle of uncertainty. Sometimes it looks like strength for one more day, unexpected provision, wise counsel, or the quiet assurance that He has not left our side. His goodness doesn't always remove the trial immediately, but it reminds us that we never face it alone.
David's invitation is still ours today. Don't rely only on someone else's testimony. Seek God for yourself. Spend time in His Word. Bring Him your fears, your questions, and your burdens. Then watch for the quiet ways He reveals His presence each day. The more you walk with Him, the more you will discover what David already knew: the Lord is good. Not because someone else said so. But because you have tasted His grace for yourself.
Where have you experienced God's goodness in your own journey? Pause today and thank Him for the ways He has carried, protected, and provided for you, even in seasons when you didn't recognize it at the time.
Pearl's Prayer:
Father, thank You for inviting me to know You personally. Help me to trust You before I see the outcome and to recognize Your goodness in both the ordinary and extraordinary moments of life. May my own experiences become a testimony that encourages others to taste and see that You are good. In Jesus' name, Amen.
