Power Of Your Words

For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.”  Matthew 12:34 (KJV)

Have you ever stopped to listen to the words you speak throughout the day? Not just the words you say to others, but the words you say about yourself? Have you noticed the tone of your conversations when life becomes difficult? Do your words reflect faith or fear? Hope or discouragement? Trust or anxiety?

Perhaps an even deeper question is this: What do your words reveal about your heart?

Jesus said, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” In other words, our words are often windows into what is happening within us. We may carefully choose our words at times, but eventually what fills our hearts finds its way into our speech. A heart filled with gratitude often speaks differently than a heart weighed down by bitterness. A heart grounded in faith sounds different than a heart consumed by fear.

The other day, I found myself reflecting on how easily words flow from our mouths without much thought. We speak over our schedules, our health, our finances, our children, our future, and ourselves. Sometimes we don't even realize the messages we repeat.

"I'll never get this right."

"Nothing ever works out for me."

"I'm too old."

"I'm not enough."

While these statements may feel harmless in the moment, they often reveal deeper struggles taking place beneath the surface. The words we speak do not create reality, but they do reveal what we believe about reality. This is why Scripture places such importance on the tongue.

In James 3, James compares the tongue to the bit in a horse's mouth and the rudder of a ship. Both are small, yet both influence direction. A small rudder can guide a massive vessel through rough waters. Likewise, our words often influence the direction of our thoughts, relationships, attitudes, and responses to life's challenges.

One of the most powerful truths about our speech is that it affects more than just us. Our words touch the lives of those around us. Think about the children and grandchildren in your life. Long after toys are forgotten and milestones have passed, many will remember the words spoken over them. Encouraging words can strengthen confidence. Loving words can provide security. Faith-filled words can help shape identity.

Throughout Scripture, blessings were spoken over children and families. Words mattered because they communicated hope, purpose, and belonging. This challenges me to consider not only what I say, but what those closest to me hear. Do my words point people toward faith? Do they reflect confidence in God's leading? Do they communicate grace?

The truth is, we cannot consistently speak faith if our hearts are disconnected from the One who gives faith. Healthy words begin with a healthy heart. As we spend time in God's presence, His Spirit gradually changes what fills our hearts, and what fills our hearts eventually changes what comes out of our mouths.

That is why there is a difference between the power of God's Word and the power of our words. God's Word creates, transforms, and accomplishes His divine purposes. Our words cannot do what God's Word does. Yet our words are still powerful because they reveal the condition of our hearts and influence the people and environments around us. God's Word changes us from the inside out. Our words often reveal whether that change is taking place.

Today, may we listen carefully to our speech, not with condemnation, but with awareness. Perhaps our words are telling us something about our hearts that God wants to heal, strengthen, or restore.

Pearl's Prayer:

Lord, let the words of my mouth reflect a heart that is surrendered to You. Help me to speak life, encouragement, truth, and grace. Guard my tongue from words that wound, discourage, or diminish faith. Fill my heart with Your presence so that what flows from my lips honors You and blesses those around me.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
