"One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts." Psalm 145:4
My granddaughters arrived for the summer, and it was exciting to watch them reunite. Their faces lit up the moment they saw one another. There were hugs, laughter, smiles, and the kind of excitement that only comes from being together again. As I sat and watched them play, I couldn't help but notice how much they have grown.
At eleven years old, they are no longer little girls. They are becoming young ladies. They are learning independence, discovering who they are, and beginning to find their place in the world.
As I watched them, a question quietly settled into my heart: What legacy will I leave for them? The older I become, the more I realize that legacy is not measured by what we leave in someone's hands. It is measured by what we leave in their hearts.
When the Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, he reminded him of the spiritual heritage that had shaped his life. Paul wrote,
"I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also" (2 Timothy 1:5).
What a beautiful testimony. Paul did not speak about Lois and Eunice's accomplishments, possessions, or status. He remembered their faith. Their love for God had been passed from one generation to the next. Years later, that faith was still visible in Timothy's life.
As I reflected on that verse, I found myself thinking about my own granddaughters. One day they will face decisions without my guidance. They will encounter challenges I cannot solve for them. They will walk roads I cannot walk for them. When that day comes, I hope they remember more than the fun we had together. I hope they remember a grandmother who loved God.
I hope they remember seeing faith lived in ordinary moments. I hope they remember prayers offered around the table, conversations about God's goodness, and the assurance that no matter what life brings, God remains faithful.
Most of all, I want them to know God for themselves. As much as I love them, they cannot live on my faith. They need their own relationship with the Lord. They need to discover His faithfulness firsthand, learn to trust His leading, and experience His presence in their own lives. Perhaps that is the greatest legacy we can leave behind for our children and grand children, not that people remember us, but that through us they come to know Him.
This summer will be filled with memories. There will be laughter, adventures, conversations, and moments I will treasure for years to come. Yet beyond the memories, my prayer is that seeds of faith are planted. Because long after the summer ends, and long after the years pass by, I pray they will still be walking with the God who has faithfully walked with me. That is the legacy I hope to leave. What legacy will you leave behind?
Pearl's Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the blessing of family and the gift of another generation. Help me to be intentional with the time You have given me. May my words, actions, and example point my granddaughters to You. Plant seeds of faith in their hearts and help them develop a personal relationship with You. May they come to know Your love, trust Your guidance, and walk faithfully with You all the days of their lives.
Amen.
