"Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away." Genesis 5:24 (NIV)
A few mornings ago, I was out in the garden before the day had fully awakened. The air was cool, the birds were singing, and the dew still rested on the leaves. I wasn't rushing to accomplish anything. There were no deadlines to meet and nowhere I needed to be. I was simply walking among the raised beds, checking on the herbs, admiring the tomatoes, and enjoying the quiet beauty of the morning.
As I walked, I found myself talking to God. Not the kind of prayer where I was asking Him to solve a problem or answer a request. I wasn't presenting Him with a list of needs. Instead, I was sharing my thoughts, my gratitude, my concerns, and even the things I couldn't quite put into words. The longer I walked, the more I realized that this is what relationship looks like.
On Sabbath, the speaker asked a question that stayed with me long after the service had ended: "Do you really know God?" The question seemed simple, yet it reached deeper than I expected.
Do I know God only through the pages of Scripture, or do I recognize His voice when He speaks to my heart? Do I know Him only because of what others have told me, or have I spent enough time with Him to know His character for myself? Do I know Him only when life becomes difficult, or do I invite Him into the ordinary moments of my day?
Many of us know about God. We know the stories. We know the commandments. We know the promises. We can quote Scripture and recount His faithfulness. But knowing about God and knowing God are not the same thing.
You don't truly know a friend because someone describes them to you. You know them because you've spent time together. Relationships are built through conversations, experiences, trust, and presence. The same is true with God.
That is what makes Enoch's story so remarkable. The Bible tells us very little about his accomplishments. There are no recorded sermons, miracles, or victories. Yet God chose to summarize his entire life with these simple words: "Enoch walked with God."
What a testimony. Of all the things that could be said about a person's life, God highlighted his relationship. Day after day. Year after year. Enoch chose God's company. Perhaps that is why Jesus later said, "And this is eternal life, that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent" (John 17:3). The goal has never been simply gathering information about God. The goal has always been relationship.
Walking with God is less about getting somewhere and more about being with Someone. Too often we approach God only when we need direction, healing, provision, or answers. Yet God desires more than occasional visits. He desires daily fellowship. He wants to walk with us in the garden, ride with us in the car, sit beside us in the waiting room, and comfort us through sleepless nights.
Walking with God is not measured by the distance we travel but by the closeness we cultivate. The more we walk with Him, the more familiar His voice becomes. The more time we spend in His presence, the more our hearts begin to reflect His heart. And perhaps the question we should all ask ourselves today is not, "Do I know about God?" But rather, "Do I really know Him?"
Pearl's Prayer:
Father, thank You for inviting me into a relationship with You. Teach me to seek more than knowledge about You. Help me to know You personally through daily fellowship and quiet moments in Your presence. May my life reflect a heart that walks closely with You, one step at a time.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
