Set the Suitcase Down

God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble." James 4:6

I was cleaning out a closet recently when I came across an old suitcase tucked away in the corner. It had not been opened in years. Curious, I pulled it out and grabbed the handle. What surprised me wasn't what was inside. It was the weight.

The suitcase wasn't large, but lifting it took far more effort than I expected. Years of old papers, forgotten keepsakes, and things I once thought I might need someday had accumulated inside. As I carried it across the room, I found myself wondering how often we do the same thing in life. Not with luggage. With pride.

The interesting thing about pride is that it rarely looks the way we imagine. We often picture pride as arrogance, boasting, or believing we're better than others. Sometimes it is. But sometimes pride wears a different disguise.

Sometimes pride looks like refusing help because we want to appear strong. Sometimes it looks like carrying burdens in silence because we don't want anyone to know we're struggling. Sometimes it looks like believing everything depends on us. Sometimes it looks like praying only after we've exhausted every other option.  Pride whispers, You've got this. You don't need anyone. Carry it yourself. And before we realize it, we're dragging a suitcase God never intended us to carry.

The story of Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 4 comes to mind. God had blessed him with influence, success, and a kingdom unlike any other. Yet as he looked over Babylon, he declared, "Is not this great Babylon, that I have built?"

Notice what filled his suitcase. His accomplishments. His achievements. His power. His success. Over time, the weight of what he believed he had accomplished became so heavy that he could no longer see the God who had made it possible. His heart became full of himself and empty of gratitude. Yet God's response was not simply judgment. It was restoration.

God allowed Nebuchadnezzar to experience a season of humbling so he could remember what pride had caused him to forget, that every blessing ultimately comes from the hand of God.

Perhaps that's a lesson we all need from time to time. Life has a way of exposing the weight we're carrying. A difficult diagnosis. A closed door. Financial uncertainty. A strained relationship. Suddenly we discover we are not as self-sufficient as we thought. And maybe that's not failure. Maybe that's grace.

Humility is not thinking less of ourselves. It is thinking rightly about ourselves. It is recognizing that our strength, wisdom, opportunities, and accomplishments are gifts entrusted to us by God.

The beautiful thing about humility is that it allows us to travel lighter. We no longer have to prove ourselves. We no longer have to carry every burden alone. We no longer have to pretend we have all the answers.

The good news is that God does not shame us for carrying the suitcase. He simply invites us to put it down. Put down the need to be in control. Put down the need for recognition. Put down the fear of appearing weak. Put down the belief that everything depends on you. Lay it at His feet.

The moment you release what was never yours to carry, you discover what humility has known all along: God's strength works best in hands that are empty enough to receive it. Where pride becomes heavy, grace becomes light.

Pearl's Prayer:

Father, teach me to walk humbly before You. Help me recognize the burdens of pride and self-reliance that I was never meant to carry. Remind me that every blessing comes from Your hand and that true strength is found in depending on You. Today, I choose to set the suitcase down and trust You with the weight I've been carrying.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

My suitcase is heavy. This message was eye opening. I never thought of some of the things you listed as pride. Hallelujah for the insight!
