"Running for More Than a Medal"

“Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one           receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it.”          1 Corinthians 9:24

Today, I stood along the route of the Boston Marathon and watched something powerful unfold. Not just a race but a story. Some runners moved with strength and steady rhythm. Others slowed, pausing to stretch, to breathe, to gather what little strength they had left. Some leaned. Some limped. Some smiled through the pain. And some… simply refused to quit.

No two runners looked the same yet they were all headed toward the same finish line. And I thought to myself: Isn’t this what our spiritual walk looks like? What moved me most was not the speed of the runners, it was their determination. No one along that course asked, “Are you the fastest?” The question was simply: “Will you finish?”

How often do we measure our spiritual lives by comparison? Who is further along. Who seems stronger. Who appears more disciplined. But today reminded me that this race of faith is not about keeping pace with someone else. It is about staying in the race God has set before you.

The Apostle Paul understood this well. He spoke of pressing forward, of running with endurance, of not giving up even when the journey felt long. Like those runners I watched today, faith is not always a smooth stride. Sometimes it is a slow step. Sometimes it is a whispered prayer. Sometimes it is just the decision to keep going when everything in you wants to stop.

Watching those runners, I noticed not everyone ran the entire race upright. Some leaned on the sidelines for support. Some were encouraged by strangers. Some slowed down and walked. Some crossed the finish line with help. It reminded me: God never intended for us to run this race alone.

There are moments in our spiritual journey when we lean on His Word, on prayer, on the strength of others. And there are moments when we become the encourager on the sidelines, reminding someone else, “You can make it.” The goal is not perfection in your pace it is faithfulness in your pursuit. Because the medal of this world fades. But the reward of a life anchored in God… endures.

So, as I watched runners give everything they had just to cross a line, I was reminded: Stay in the race. Even when you’re tired. Even when your stride feels uneven. Even when progress feels slow. It is not about speed, It is about endurance. For the race is not who finishes fast....but who can endure till the end.  And there is a finish line that matters far more than any medal.

Pearl"s Prayer:

Father, Teach me to run my race with endurance. When I grow weary, strengthen me. When I feel discouraged, remind me why I started. Help me to keep my eyes on You not on the pace of others, but on the path You have set before me. When I feel like stopping, whisper to my spirit to keep going.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
